Ernesto soaks PR on path to Jamaica

By CB Online Staff

Issued : Saturday, August 4, 2012 09:11 AM

Tropical Storm Ernesto blew across open waters Saturday on a projected path that would skirt Jamaica and hit Mexico after dumping heavy rain on islands in the eastern Caribbean.
Ernesto was passing about 300 miles south of Puerto Rico but outer bands of the tropical storm was forecast to continue to affect Caribbean waters and the Mona Passage as well as parts of the islands from time to time through at least this Saturday afternoon.
Outer rain of this system will be accompanied of strong gusty winds and locally heavy rainfall. Winds will remain mainly from the southeast at 15 to 25 mph with higher gusts up to 40 mph near the thunderstorms. Squally conditions and hazardous seas can be expected across all of the coastal waters through at least tonight, said the National Weather Service in San Juan.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Ernesto was expected to roll south of Jamaica as a hurricane Sunday afternoon. The forecast would carry it into the coastal resorts of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula as a Category 1 hurricane on Wednesday.
On Friday, Dominica closed its international airport for a second day, while St. Lucia ordered businesses to close for half the day as Ernesto swept through the area. A ferry that travels to Guadeloupe, Dominica, Martinique and St. Lucia also temporarily suspended service.
No damage or flooding was reported on islands affected by the storm.
The hurricane center said Ernesto had maximum sustained winds of about 60 mph (95 kph) early Saturday. It was about 305 miles (490 kilometers) south-southwest of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and was moving westward at 18 mph (30 kph).
Meanwhile, a new tropical storm, Florence, formed further out in the Atlantic. It had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (65 kph) and was about 330 miles (530 kilometers) west of the Cape Verde Islands. The National Hurricane Center said it was not expected to reach hurricane force as it marches generally westward.

Me parece maravilloso. Two writers head to Laguna Grande in Fajardo and Mosquito Bay in Vieques

Kayaking Puerto Rico

Two kayakers paddle through the Bio Bay in Laguna Grande in Fajardo, Puerto Rico.

David Handschuh

Bioluminesent Bay, Vieques, Puerto Rico

Editor’s note: In Puerto Rico, there are three bioluminescence bays, or “bio bays,” bodies of water containing millions of micro-organisms, or dinoflagellates that draw tourists looking to see the memorable glow. In this report, one Daily News writer explores Laguna Grande on the island’s northeast side; another takes readers to Mosquito Bay on Vieques, a small island off the southeast coast of Puerto Rico. The third option: La Parguera, is in the southwest part of the main island, and is not covered in this report.
BY DEBORAH ABRAMS KAPLAN
I didn’t know we’d be paddling through mangroves. And that it would be almost pitch black.
Lest you think I’m a newbie kayaker, I've done two multi-day paddling trips (both while pregnant): one unguided five-day trip among the Everglades’ mangrove islands, and the other circumnavigating Espiritu Santo Island in the Sea of Cortez.
But I’ve never been so disoriented as during the 45 minute paddle to Laguna Grande, one of Puerto Rico’s three bioluminescence bays.
When our kayaks finally reached Laguna Grande we created a side-by-side flotilla with our group, so the guide could explain about the bioluminescent bay.
The waters are filled with prehistoric one-celled organisms, half-animal, half-plant. When disturbed, they glow like fireflies.
I felt like I was on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.
When we dipped the paddle in, it lit up, outlined like an X-ray. Cupping the water in our hands, it looked like we were holding sparkling pixie dust.
Even after the initial glow subsided, the water looked like it held twinkling stars.
To say it was magical sounds cliché, but it was true.
But I wish I had known how arduous — but still fun — the paddle to the protected enclave is.
Obviously I hadn’t done my homework.
Along the way, my 10-year-old daughter, Dori, shrieked as she hit the low-hanging branch from the kayak bow. The guide silently glided over to free our boat from the branches, shining his flashlight, which allowed me a brief moment to glance around at the surroundings.
We had booked our trip purposefully for a new moon night, so that it would be even darker, to more easily see the glowing dinoflagellates once we got to the lagoon.
Those dinoflagellates thrive in Laguna Grande partly because the nature reserve has limited pollution in the area. They no longer allow swimmers in the water. Sunscreen and bug repellents (containing DEET) were killing off the very organisms people wanted to see.
The mangroves that almost tossed us from the kayaks help the organisms thrive, releasing vitamin B12 in the waters. This, along with the sunlight, help them live and grow.
Spanish explorers during the 17th century thought the water was the Devil’s work, and they tried to kill them by putting rocks at the mangrove entrance.
This had the opposite effect, increasing the available food and maintaining the favored warmer water temperatures.
Laguna Grande is one of three bio bays in Puerto Rico — and among about a dozen sites worldwide — and is on the island’s northeast side, near Fajardo.
While our guide said it has the same brightness and concentration of organisms as Puerto Mosquito, off the nearby Vieques island (a 75-minute boat ride), die-hards disagree, saying that that Puerto Mosquito is better. ----

Vieques gives us many great reasons to head to a small island that’s just a short ferry ride or small plane trip from a large island, Puerto Rico.
Quiet, peaceful and with a slow pace that’s the antithesis of New York, Vieques offers freely roaming wild horses, hundreds of starfish visible in two feet of water and what many experts call the most bioluminescent bay in the world.
As I flew from San Juan in a Cessna, I could see most of the island out the plane’s front window, all while dropping through the clouds and onto the runway.
I was picked up at the airport by a jeep from the W, the best (and only) hotel on the island.
A few minutes after check-in, my bathing suit was on and I was sitting poolside with a drink, yummy ceviche and a view of the ocean, chatting with my friends who were getting married.
Two hours and several cocktails later, I’m off to their wedding ceremony. With a rent-a-reverend who moved from Poughkeepsie and owns a Vieques guest house, a local photographer who waits tables in between wedding shoots and me as their witnesses, Dee and Mike were wed under sweeping palm trees on a lookout over the ocean as the sun set.
We departed the W and headed for Mosquito Bay, which is appropriately named. Itchy from bites (do not forget your mosquito spray but make sure that it does not contain DEET, which could hurt the bioluminescent micro-organisms), we met Abe of Abe’s Snorkeling and BioBay Tours.
The journey became the destination as the group boarded a rickety old school bus that bounced through unlit, unpaved, potholed roads towards the bay. We were outfitted with oars and life vests, buddied up into two-person kayaks and slowly made our way past the shadows of mangroves on the shore.
It was dark enough to see the twinkle of stars from horizon to horizon and an occasional shooting star. Every paddle stroke of the oar left a sparkling streak of bioluminescence in the water. Like blips on a radar, large fish left blue streaks through the bay.
Most people won’t be able to record photographs or videotape of this natural phenomenon, due to the technical limitation of cell phones and cameras.
But the firsthand natural experience of a unique, adventurous two hours of paddling was well worth the $40.

If you go:
Laguna Grande
Laguna Grande is about an hour and 20 minutes from San Juan, and the BioBay kayak trip can be done as an excursion. The tour operators generally run one to two trips an evening, and offer round-trip transportation for an additional $20/person. At least half a dozen companies operate tours. Without transportation, rates are currently $45/person (with a $5 discount for paying with cash).

Ernesto soaks PR on path to Jamaica
