Weather Underground midday recap for Monday, June 03, 2013. Wet and unsettled weather continued across much of the Eastern Seaboard and along the Gulf Coast on Monday as a slow moving cold front continues Eastward across the region toward the East Coast. Plenty of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico streaming ahead of this frontal disturbance combined with continued instability along and near the front translated into another round of scattered showers and thunderstorms from southern New England through the southeastern corner of the nation. Periods of heavy rainfall also fell in areas of the Mid-Atlantic and near coastal areas of the southern New England areas. As this disturbance shifted eastward, a cooler and drier airmass followed and spread across the East, instigating a cooling trend across much of the region. Elsewhere in the East, rain and thunderstorms continue in the Florida Peninsula on Monday as southeasterly flow ushered tropical moisture across the region. Out West, a frontal system in the Pacific Northwest continued across the Intermountain West with areas of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Meanwhile, a trough of low pressure developed across the Rockies and triggered a few clusters of strong to potentially severe thunderstorms with hail and damaging wind gusts in the Plains during the afternoon. Areas from central South Dakota into Nebraska, western Kansas, and Oklahoma and Texas Panhandles remained at slight risk of this severe weather activity on Monday.

Robert Rodriguez’s sequel ‘Machete Kills’ won’t be blasting it’s way into theaters until September, but it’s time to start the ramp up and what better way than Facebook?
That’s really a question. Is there a better way than Facebook?
Bypass all my quips and questions byliking the film yourself at it’s Facebook Page.Otherwise, strap in for a Michelle Rodriguez character poster, because that’s what you clicked for.

‘Blade Runner 2′ Hires ‘Green Lantern’ Writer

BLADE_RUNNER_BANNER
If you hold out hope that there’s something more to be mined from Ridley Scott in a (Se?Pre?)quel to his other famous sci-fi film, ‘Blade Runner,’ then: HOO BOY, true believer, great news for you!
The Wrapis reporting that Michael Green, writer of ‘Green Lantern’ (no relation) and succinctly titled television like ‘Heroes’ and ‘Kings’ has been hired on by Warner Brothers to write a ‘Blade Runner 2′ for Scott Free, Ridley Scott’s production company.
One way of looking at this is as a sign of new movement on the project, perhaps in time to bring back Harrison Ford in some manner, as an old man…thereby ruining certain readings of the classic film…which sounds a lot like ‘Prometheus’… but maybe good this time?
I’m sorry, I let that line of thinking get away from me.
Another way of looking at this is a trial balloon draft, which I can only assume Scott Free drowns in considering how many different projects Ridley Scott speaks into existence in-between movies.
The truth?
Michael Green is writing something in the ‘Blade Runner’ universe…that seems to be about it.

Explorers Seeking Spanish Ships Sunk by Pirates in 1615 Near Peru

A group of researchers headed by maritime historian Jorge Ortiz Sotelo is continuing the search for two Spanish vessels that went missing along the coast south of Lima in 1615. Sotelo on Monday presented a preliminary summary of his work so far, a project he began in 2010 and for which he has the support of the National Geographic Society and the Peruvian Ministry of Culture. Ortiz consulted Peruvian and Spanish archives to identify the possible locations of the ships and established a search area where four research expeditions have been undertaken with a magnetometer, a device that measures magnetic fields, and a metal detector. Eleven magnetic anomalies were found in the area that could be the remains of one or both ships, and although a visual inspection of the ocean floor has been conducted in the area no visible evidence of those wrecks was found, he said. Ortiz says that underwater archaeology still has not advanced very far in Peru. “The work that’s been done up to now has been ... to recover objects or search for treasure, something that, in reality, constitutes a sort of submarine grave-robbing that destroys many times more evidence than it could contribute to a better understanding of our maritime past,” he said. The Santa Ana and the San Francisco were sunk in July 1615 in a clash with the fleet of Dutch pirate Joris van Spilbergen, a battle that resulted in 400 deaths.

New Border Apprehensions Figures Point To Pattern

For the first six months of this fiscal year, ending in March, Border Patrol apprehensions of undocumented migrants entering from Mexico climbed 13 percent compared with a year earlier.
The new data come as the debate over immigration reform and how much more to spend locking down the border intensifies in Washington. The Senate is expected to soon begin considering a sweeping bipartisan reform bill.
The increase in apprehensions generally signals an increase in attempted crossings. And the recent surge is coming almost entirely through the Rio Grande Valley in Texas, which is beginning to rival the Tucson Sector as the busiest — and deadliest — route for migrants from Mexico.

The 6 Most LGBT-Friendly Latin American Countries Are...

Latin America may be more LGBT-friendly than you think.
This year’s edition of the “Spartacus International Gay Travel Index,” released in February, places several Latin American countries among the most LGBT-friendly in the world, belying the stereotype of a region drenched in Catholicism-infused machismo.
The index, which ranks 138 of the world’s countries, calculates its scores based on criteria including legislation guaranteeing the LGBT rights to marriage and adoption, as well as the frequency of acts of violence against the community.
Sweden topped the list, followed by several European countries before the first Latin American country appears, holding 9th place.
It’s not surprising that much of the region fared well. Though many might suspect that Latin America’s Catholicism would hold it back from embracing LGBT rights, several countries in the region have passed trailblazing legislation.
Some places still have a ways to go, but are making strides. For example, Puerto Rico, which placed a mediocre 89th, just passed amajor anti-discrimination law aimed at defending the LGBT community.
At the same time, a few countries did pretty poorly. Honduras, one of the most violent countries in Latin America, came in at a dismal 104th -- tied with Peru.
Find out which Latin American countries are the most LGBT-friendly in the slideshow above.
