When he was riding high as one of the best featherweight contenders in the world Juan Manuel Lopez enjoyed the spotlight and everything that went with it.
“Wherever I was, whatever I was doing, there was JuanMa,’’ said Bob Arum of Top Rank, Marquez’s promoter. “Whenever Manny fought I brought him out. We did a birthday party for Manny and JuanMa was there. He was enjoying life.’’
Maybe JuanMa was enjoying life too much to concentrate on what was going on with his ring career and his home life.
It caught up to him last April when he went through a divorce and then, no doubt distracted, suffered the first loss of his career on an 8th round TKO by Orlando Salido in front of his hometown crowd at Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Lopez lost his WBO featherweight title and some of his confidence.
Lopez (31-1, 28 KOs) will be trying to regain his confidence and his world title when he faces Salido (37-11-2, 25 KOs) in a rematch for the WBO title at Roberto Clemente Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Showtime on Saturday night.
“The idea is for him to climb back on the horse that threw him the first time," said Arum.
Arum said he’s not really sure exactly what he’ll see from Lopez on Saturday night.
“Once you suffer a devastating knockout can you ever recover from that? Can you go back to regain your ability and your confidence?’’ Arum said. “Some guys can and some guys can’t. Tommy Hearns recovered from some devastating knockouts to put in some good performances. But Donald Curry never did.
“He (Lopez) says he’s put in the time. He said he feels confident. All the outward signs indicate that he’ll make a recovery from that first fight. I’m hoping to see it. But I don’t know."
That is the intrigue that is held out in this featherweight matchup. Lopez certainly is saying the right things.
“I have had a great preparation for this fight and I’m very confident,’’ Lopez said at a press conference on Wednesday. “I never gave excuses about my last fight with Salido. He won. He knocked me out, fine. I don’t make excuses. I fight. If the ref didn’t stop the fight when he did last time, I’d still be fighting."
Confidence is not a one-way street, especially in this situation.
"Entering the first fight, I had some doubts but now I have beaten Juanma and I know I can beat him again,’’ Salido said. “I am 1000 percent sure I can win. I’ve been in the gym preparing and I know what to expect. Even though I won last year, I still have something to prove. In the ring, we have a score to settle."
If Lopez can beat Salido in the rematch, Arum has big plans for him the remainder of the year. Arum said he would like to see Lopez matched against WBA 122-pound champion Guillermo Rigondeaux, WBO 122-pound champion Nonito Donaire or Mikey Garcia, who is fighting Bernabe Concepcion on the undercard in Puerto Rico on Saturday night. Arum wants to bring Lopez to New York for a fight at the Garden in December. But everything is riding on whether Lopez can get past Salido the second time around.
GAMBOA UNHAPPY WITH PROMOTERS
In the old days a boxer would wait until the night of the fight in the dressing room to try to hold up the promoter for additional money before a match.
But times have changed.
Yuriorkis Gamboa is unhappy with his contract with his promoters Ahmet Oner and Bob Arum of Top Rank and said he will not fight Brandon Rios in a WBA lightweight title match that is supposed to take place in Las Vegas on Showtime on April 14.
Gamboa, a Cuban defector, was a no-show at press conferences in Miami and Los Angeles earlier this week to announce the fight. Gamboa said he has not signed a bout agreement for the match. Top Rank said the fight will go on with Rios, even if Gamboa decides to follow through on his threat not to fight. At the LA press conference Rios held up a picture of Gamboa and the inscription on the picture called Gamboa “a coward.’’
Gamboa told RingTV.com that he skipped the press conferences "because I never signed a contract for the fight, and since I didn't have a contract, and we're still under negotiations, then there was no reason for me to go to the press conference."
Top Rank has said Rios will fight on April 14 with or without Gamboa as the opponent.
HAUSER SIGNS ON AT HBO
Author Thomas Hauser has signed as a consultant with HBO Sports. Exactly what he’s going to consult with them on no one is exactly sure. Hauser was given the consultancy after years of writing scathing articles critical of the cable network’s boxing programming. His criticism was so harsh that Ross Greenburg resigned as President of HBO Sports last December a few months before his contract expired. Many of the people Hauser ripped are still working at HBO Sports. Hauser’s hiring came from the top levels of HBO where apparently the philosophy is if you can’t shut ‘em up, bring ‘em in the house.
Hauser said he will continue to write articles about boxing for the website TheSweetScience.com. Can’t wait to see what he writes about HBO next. The HBO honchos hired Hauser to silence him and have given him some nebulous responsibilities that call for him to develop projects. Wish we all could get those kinds of six-figure development deals. This is a real head scratcher even for people who have followed boxing for a long time. It looks like an orchestrated campaign by Hauser to get a job with HBO. And by giving him a job, HBO is admitting that his criticism was correct and he’s the only one who can fix it. Shame on both of them.

The following video pays tribute to the hard working Puerto Rican population. Our goal is to assist in breaking down barriers and destroy negative stereotypes. We know we are not going to accomplish that feat with one video. However, this is the first step in the right direction for our mission.

Busted: Government Runs Hacking Groups: Infowars Nightly News

The establishment media has characterized the leader of LulzSec ratting out his hacktivist comrades as betrayal, but the incident reveals something far more sinister -- government is responsible for creating and unleashing computer hacker groups. www.infowars.com www.prisonplanet.tv twitter.com Hector Xavier Monsegur, said to be the leader of LulzSec, worked for the FBI, according to news reports. He was reportedly arrested in Puerto Rico last June, pleaded guilty to hacking charges, and then began working with the FBI -- or so the cover story would have it. Monsequr, aka Sabu, decided what targets to attack and who would participate in the attacks, more than likely at the direction of this FBI handlers. It is believed he participated in the Anonymous effort to hack HBGary, the security firm that works closely with the CIA, NSA, FBI, and the Pentagon. Sabu's Lulz Security, commonly abbreviated as LulzSec, claimed responsibility for taking the CIA website offline. It also attacked Fox News, PBS, Sony, and a number of gamer sites. LulzSec claims to have hacked local InfraGard chapter sites, the organization affiliated with the FBI, and released the emails and passwords of a number of users of senate.gov. LulzSec and Anonymous attacks have provided the government with an excuse to push their cyber security agenda and propaganda campaign, including the proposal for a "kill switch" that would have allowed Obama to shut down the internet (due to public outrage, the proposal was ...

Romney to campaign in PR next week - Caribbean Business - 09/03/12

via Puerto Rico Newswire on 3/10/12

By CB Online Staff: Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney is scheduled to follow the campaign trail to Puerto Rico next week to stump ahead of the island's March 18 primary, The Wall Street Journal reported. Puerto Rico Gov. Luis Fortuño endorsed Romney ahead of the key Florida primary last month, which could help the former Massachusetts governor win the 23 delegates at stake on the island. In the overall race for delegates, Romney leads with 422, followed by Rick Santorum with 181 and Newt Gingrich with 107. Ron Paul trails with 46. Romney is still a long way from the 1,144 delegates needed to win the nomination, but he is the only candidate on pace to reach the magic number before the party's national convention in August. At their current rates, Santorum and Gingrich won't reach even half the number needed. To date, Romney has won 55 percent of the delegates available in primaries and caucuses; Santorum has won 24 percent, and Gingrich has won 14 percent.
