Sustainable Caribbean: Corporate Social Responsibility and Caribbean Tourism

ENSURING THE LONGEVITY of Caribbean resorts and the surrounding communities in which they operate goes hand in hand.
The unique advantage of island tourism is the potential direct and indirect impact that can be realized throughout the townships and parishes of the Caribbean.
No longer does managing a tourism business only comprise the fundamentals of the operations and service, however.
While quality is the top priority, it is the responsibility of travel and tourism industry participants to recognize the needs and abilities of Caribbean communities to support, supply, advance, co-exist and provide the experiential travel that the new-age traveler seeks.
Today, world travelers seek to add meaning to their vacation; a lasting experience with memories of connections in a unique destination.
This connection and partnership is created through corporate social responsibility (CSR) and is sustained through the various projects, outreach and partnerships between tourism businesses and their communities.
What does CSR mean within our region and how does it benefit the Caribbean travel and tourism sector?
There are a number of ways:
  • Ensuring the well being and fair working conditions of organizations and creating capacity building opportunities within their workforce structures. This allows for a sustainable working environment and builds accountability.
  • Working in tandem with local communities to ensure future generations’ access to literacy and tools required for them to excel in the industry.
  • Leading a work-release program or internship for aspiring chefs to cultivate the next culinary experience of our islands.
  • Supporting local conservation programmes to preserve the native flora and fauna.
  • Developing a workshop for local handicraftsmen and assisting with authentication of their product for sale in resort boutiques.
  • Transforming existing structures into training school and residential complexes.
  • Partnering with local farmers to begin a compost program to fertilize their crops and sell back to resorts, providing a “farm to table” experience for guests.
All of these are examples of socially responsible connections which can be made by the Caribbean tourism industry to ensure longevity and diversity within the sector.
Several Caribbean resorts are already engaging in these kinds of practices: The Tryall Club, Hanover, Jamaica provide CSR opportunities for staff, guests and villa owners to visit the local Basic School and encourage guests to donate books and school supplies while on their vacation.  Guests and villa owners also spend time reading to the children and taking part in their activities.
Another, the Rockhouse Resort in Negril, has its Rockhouse Foundation, which supports the expanding and renovation of under-resourced schools throughout rural Jamaica. It also runs an annual environmental challenge as well for the schools, allowing students to participate and win prizes for their knowledge in environmental awareness.
Benefiting guest experiences while benefiting the advancement of Caribbean communities should be the focus of the Caribbean tourism industry as we seek to ensure a vibrant and secure tourism sector throughout the region — because tourism is everyone’s business.

IRREPARABLE ECONOMÍA DEL ELA - via Política – Vocero de Puerto Rico on 6/5/13

IRREPARABLE ECONOMÍA DEL ELA

Irreparable economy ELA

Economists see no real evidence of structural changes in the short term
Puerto Rico lost the ability to get out of the economic stagnation that is located and there is no economic indicator which shows signs of change, several economists interviewed assured.
Worse, all agreed that it is impossible to predict when it will experience even a small economic recovery, as noted there is no actual recovery plan, the economy grows and it looks like it will halt. The recession continues and gone are the predictions of a double dip recession as projected six months ago, by December 2012.
Economist Luis Benitez said that talk of a "double dip recession" is a mistaken premise, as it exists for the country should have reflected a specific recovery and this never happened. He said there were months where they endured the fall, or the speed slowed, "but never stopped falling as many have interpreted".
According to the economist Santos Negron, the island is in "secular stagnation" where not peel or shows signs of recovery. He said that for the past years it was assumed that the economy of Puerto Rico showed changes into positive territory before the receipt of various federal financial aid and the effect of the bond issues were made. However, that did not happen because the economic productive base of the country was too weak to allow the takeoff.
"What is at issue is a structural problem rooted in the weakening of the productive base, which has increased with the weakening and loss of manufacturing jobs. The situation is so strong that there is no big push any stimulus that has been reacted, which is complicated by the government's budget problem. You need to put the house in order to avoid degradation and to return to the markets and revitalize the economy. Endogenously, the country can not get out of the economic situation, no recording mechanisms and the tax base is not the alternative because you can do is further weaken the economy and prolong and deepen the recession, "he said Negron.
For the economist Argaeus Quiñones, the situation in the island is a cumulative economic contraction of over 10%, accompanied by local fiscal crisis and a global recession. He said that the government has lost the ability to fire the economic engines. He stated that "there is light at the end of the road", what he said is unfortunate, started from 2006 to 2012 the island received economic stimulus federal, and local bond issues over $ 30,000 million. He also said that the money was not enough to lift the stalemate in Puerto Rico who was nevertheless approved a tax reform that reduced revenues to the Treasury $ 1.200 million, which means aggravated the situation.
Quinones added that the country's debt levels, which today represent 100% of gross domestic product and a pattern of an economy that is not growing, are two elements that keep the island unable to get out of the recession that the clothes in a eight years. "It is necessary to achieve political and social consensus country that does not put more burdens on employees and not touch his benefits were acquired, which is achieved tighten the oversight agency for the most wealthy and achieve a transparent government, where the citizen is comfortable with providing for the end of the day is what they do with their money. The government needs growth strategies "recommended Quinones.
Also, Benitez agreed that the problem here is structural where the economic model wore the most. Emphasized to be necessary to restructure the economic model. "Since 2006 we have been out of recession for lack of focus. We must stabilize northern economic development we want for the country. Today there is no consistency, the country needs to agree, like all economic sectors. It is a painful process by which you will have to spend to achieve the consensus of the country, which will take two to three years, "he said.
As alternatives to facilitate this process, Benitez mentioned the need to be disciplined in the repayment of the debts, not to false assumptions and be consistent in the audit of the collections.

A Confucius Institute will be opening at the University of the West Indies St Augustine.
The announcement comes after a visit by a six-member delegation from the Hanban/Confucius Institute headquarters in China to Trinidad.
The institute will be the second of its kind in the Caribbean, following the establishment of an institute at the University of the West Indies Mona campus in Jamaica in 2010.
UWI Professor Clement Sankat and Xu Lin, director general of Hanban signed the Memorandum of Understanding creating the centre.
UWI and the institute first signed a memorandum of understanding in 2010. That included the provision of a Mandarin language and Chinese culture lecturer at the UWI Centre for Language Learning from January 2011.

China ramps up presence in Caribbean

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago — Chinese President Xi Jinping met for the first time with officials in Trinidad and Tobago Saturday on the first stop of a four-country regional tour.
In a news conference, Xi announced that China was awarding Trinidad a $250 million loan to build a children’s hospital. He also said he and Trinidadian Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar had signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate on a range of issues.
“We both agree to actively advance cooperation in key areas of energy, minerals and infrastructure development and also to advance our cooperation in new energy, telecommunications and agriculture,” Xi told reporters after he and Persad-Bissessar met in her office.
Persad-Bissessar said Trinidad views China “as a very key business partner and a potential new market for our energy products and for alternative energy research.” She added that Xi agreed to send the Caribbean 100 volunteer medical professionals over the next three years.
Officials also announced Trinidad plans to open an embassy in Beijing later this year, and Persad-Bissessar will make an official visit to China in November. A Chinese waterproofing firm named Beijing Oriental Yuhong also signed an agreement with the Lake Asphalt company of Trinidad to build a plant to produce roofing and other waterproofing products.
Xi arrived in Port-of-Spain late Friday for his first state visit to the twin-island nation, a leading supplier of natural gas. It was also the first ever visit for a Chinese president.
During his stay, he’s also expected to meet with leaders from other Caribbean countries, including Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, the Bahamas, Suriname and Jamaica.
China and Trinidad have had diplomatic ties for almost 40 years, and Trinidad is a major trading partner in the Caribbean for China.
That trade has grown significantly, from $174 million in exports and imports in 2006 to $450 million last year, according to an International Monetary Fund database.
Xi is also traveling to Mexico, Costa Rica and the U.S. on this trip.
China has been ramping up investment and aid in the English-speaking Caribbean in recent years from hotels and container ports in the Bahamas to bauxite mines in Guyana. China has pledged $400 million in aid to Jamaica and companies from the Asian country are helping to lay fiber-optic cables linking Cuba, Jamaica and Venezuela, as well as Guyana and Brazil.
The investments are mostly business ventures, but some see the increased activity as an effort by China to establish a Caribbean beachhead at the doorstep of the U.S.
The Chinese president’s trip comes just days after U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and political leaders from across the Caribbean met in the capital of resource-rich Trinidad & Tobago to sign a trade agreement and discuss a range of security, investment and energy issues.
After a more than three-hour session, Biden signed an agreement providing a framework for trade and investment between the U.S. and the Caribbean Community, a group of 15 nations and territories that include Trinidad, Jamaica and the Bahamas.
Biden also disclosed that Washington and Trinidad recently signed a memorandum on launching a renewable energy research center in the country for the whole Caribbean region.
“There’s probably no group of nations better situated to take advantage of renewable energy possibilities than here in the Caribbean,” he said.
Officials also spoke to Biden about their concerns regarding generous U.S. subsidies to the rum industry in its Caribbean territories of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands that regional distillers worry will drive some island labels out of business or force them to sell out to global beverage corporations.
