PRN-Caribbean News from mikenova (15 sites): Latin American Herald Tribune: Pro-Brexit Donor Arron Banks Faces UK Criminal Probe over Campaign Funding

PRN from mikenova (108 sites)
Pro-Brexit Donor Arron Banks Faces UK Criminal Probe over Campaign Funding LONDON – The United Kingdom’s national crime agency said on Thursday it had opened an investigation into a high-profile pro-Brexit donor and the unofficial campaign group Leave.EU, which he co-founded, over suspected electoral law offenses linked to foreign funding in the run-up to the 2016 referendum in which the country voted to leave the European Union.Millionaire insurance tycoon and Brexit campaigner Arron Banks, and his associate Elizabeth Bilney, will face a criminal probe after the UK’s electoral commission found alleged wrongdoing regarding the origin of around 8 million pounds of donations he and his companies said they had lent or given to pro-Brexit campaign groups for the referendum. The investigation is set to look into money allocated to Better for the Country, a company set up by Banks to finance Leave.EU, after the commission said a number of criminal offenses could have been committed and referred the case to the NCA.“We have reasonable grounds to suspect money given to Better for the Country came from impermissible sources and that Mr Banks and Ms Bilney, the responsible person for Leave.EU, knowingly concealed the circumstances under which this money was provided,” Bob Posner, director of political finance and regulation at the Commission, said in a statement. The Commission said its investigation centered on 2 million pounds ($2.5 million) reportedly loaned to Better for the Country by Banks as well as another 6 million pounds allocated to the company on behalf of Leave.EU, paid by the insurance mogul himself, adding that at least 2.9 million pounds of this funding was put towards the referendum campaign.Investigators said they had reason to suspect some of the donations came from Rock Holdings Limited, a company incorporated on the Isle of Man, a British Crown dependency in the Irish Sea, which if true would qualify as an inadmissible payment.“The law is that loans and donations to registered campaigners can only come from certain permissible sources, which essentially excludes overseas or foreign funding from any consequent impermissible influence on the outcome of the EU Referendum,” the Commission statement said. The NCA said several other unnamed individuals would be subject to the investigation.Banks, a former donor to the UK’s Conservative Party who in his latter years defected to the United Kingdom Independence Party, has denied any wrongdoing.“I am pleased that the Electoral Commission has referred me to the National Crime Agency,” he said in a statement shared by Leave.EU.
