Mike Nova:
Gay Rights Are Human Rights. Gay Rights are the inseparable and very important part of Human Rights in general. In our times the degree of their advancement and the successes of World Gay Liberation Movement are directly and inextricably linked with the degree of advancement of general Human Rights and personal liberties and freedoms in various cultures and countries. The state of Gay Rights became one of the litmus tests of modern democracies and a test of the degree of general level of xenophobia and totalitarianism in any society, the Nazi Germany and the USSR being two of the best examples. If the state and the attitudes towards Gay Rights in any society are healthy (balanced, rational, unbiased and as fair and equalitarian as possible, etc.) this society itself is healthy.

Three strangulation deaths in New York — two in Queens and one in Manhattan — have prompted city leaders to advise the gay community to take precautions when meeting someone for the first time.
The New York Daily News reports:
City Council Speaker Christine Quinn (D-Manhattan), who is also openly gay, expressed her condolences to the families of the victims and urged the LGBT community to protect itself.
“The perpetrators must be apprehended and prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” she said in a statement.
The New York City Anti-Violence Project noted a 13% increase in violence against the city’s LGBT community, despite a 16% decrease nationwide, from 2010 to 2011. Deputy director Ejeris Dixon said she’s seen a recent increase in reports of “pick-up violence” — i.e. when people go home together after meeting for the first time online, through a hook-up app or in a bar.
“People feel that they need to hide the fact that they’re meeting someone online and that’s the problem,” she said. “Let people know who you are going to meet, where you are going to meet and meet in a public place.”
AVP offers a number of safety tips to avoid pick-up violence on its website. Anyone with information on the murders can call the NYPD Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS.

The New York Daily News reports:
The latest victim, Joseph Benzinger, 54, of Middle Village, was found strangled to death late Saturday night at the Crown Motor Inn in Elmhurst.“It’s frightening,” said openly gay City Councilman Daniel Dromm (D-Jackson Heights). “I fear that there could be somebody out there targeting gay men. People need to exercise extreme caution.”
Queens middle school teacher David Rangel, 53, was discovered dead in his Jackson Heights apartment on Jan. 26. Two days later, Charles Romo, 48, was found tied up with a bag over his head in his apartment in Hamilton Heights, Manhattan.

A Virginia bill that would have protected LGBT state employees from discrimination, was tabled in the House General Laws Professions/Occupations and Administrative Process Subcommittee, thereby killing for the remainder of this legislative session.
Introduced by Senators Donald McEachin and Adam Ebbin, SB 701 passed in the state Senate last month. According to polls, 90% of Virginians believe gay and lesbian workers should be protected.
“It’s outrageous that a few state Delegates refuse to ensure Virginia law reflects the basic tenet of fairness and provide workplace protections for all Virginians,” said Progress VA director Anna Scholl, executive director of ProgressVA, said. “No citizen should fear the loss of their livelihood because of who they are and who they love.”

Gay slay mystery: Fears grow as 4 gay men killed in NYC - New York's PIX11 / WPIX-TV
Online dating may be the common thread among four murders that have spurred community activists and the New York City Council to issue an alert. It targets all New Yorkers, but focuses on one particular at-risk group.
All four victims were gay men, in their late forties or fifties, and most, if not all of them, may have met their attackers online.
“For everyone who has never experienced online violence, people are frightened,” said Ejeris Dixon, deputy director of the Anti-Violence Project about the severity of the situation. ”For people who have [experienced online violence], it’s a triggering experience.”
Her organization has seen thousands of cases of violence against gay victims over its 30-year history, but the latest string of killings stands out even for veteran advocates for violence prevention.
The most recent murder of a gay man took place at the Crown Motel on Sunday, a business on Queens Boulevard in Elmhurst that rents rooms in four-hour blocks at a time. Cleaning staff found the body of Joseph Benzinger in the room he’d rented the night before.
“[He was a] very good guy,” motel desk clerk Mariela Ortiz said. ”He was a regular customer here. …Very quiet. Normal. He would say, ‘Hi, how are you, how’s your day.’” His was the latest in a string of homicides that are sounding an alarm.
The weekend before his murder, David Rangle, 53, was found dead in his apartment in Jackson Heights, Queens, less than a mile away from where Benzinger was murdered. Less than a week before that, on January 28th, Charles Romo, 48, was murdered at his apartment in Hamilton Heights, Harlem. Detectives believe he allowed two men he knew into his apartment, who robbed and killed him.
It is quite possible that all three victims met the people who would become their killers online. It’s also why City Councilmember Daniel Dromm, an openly gay legislator who represents Central Queens, held a news conference Tuesday to warn people interested in hooking up online.
“They need to exercise extreme caution while dating,” Dromm said at the news conference. He also mentioned the murder of Queens gay activist Lou Rispoli. Two suspects have been on the loose since Rispoli’s late October killing.
It’s not clear what if any connection there is among all of the murders. However, leaders and activists in the community feel that the homicides are cause for a warning to online daters to be cautious before killers can strike again.
“Let people know, ‘I’m going to be hooking up online tonight,’” Anti-Violence Project Deputy Director Ejeris Dixon said, as a word of advice. ”[Ask them] can you call me in a couple of hours?’ and it’s that simple.”
The Anti-Violence Project website http://www.avp.org has an array of information people can use to fight violence and to report the perpetrators of violence.
Meanwhile NYPD detectives confirmed to PIX11 News that they are poring over video surveillance in search of suspects in the most recent homicides of gay men. They have not chosen to release the video.

Oxygen's answer to "America's Next Top Model" is here with the debut of "The Face," and it even brought an "ANTM" alum with it by signing Nigel Barker to host. But right away it becomes pretty clear that this is Naomi Campbell's show. She's an executive producer as well as one of the mentor/judges on the show.
While she knows the rules of the show, when things don't go her way in this first episode, Naomi flips out. After fellow judge Karolina Kurkova eliminated one of Naomi's contestants, Naomi got so upset she tried to shut down the cameras, covering up the lens with a card so they wouldn't see how mad she was.
"Don’t even talk to me right now. Do not talk to me. Get out!" she shouted in frustration to Karolina.
Later, she said, "I’m very disappointed in your choice, Karolina. And all I’m gonna tell you is, it’s game on from now on." And this is Week 1 of the competition. Things should only get more intense from here as the competition tries to pare it down to one winner who will become "the face" of ULTA beauty.
The competition -- and tension -- continues on "The Face," Tuesdays at 9 p.m. EST on Oxygen.
TV Replay scours the vast television landscape to find the most interesting, amusing, and, on a good day, amazing moments, and delivers them right to your browser.

The Westboro Baptist Church has announced it will picket Vassar College on February 28 because of the school’s reputation as a gay-friendly institution. (We realize that’s a lame reason to demonstrate, but this is WBC we’re talking about.)
But, making lemonade out of lemons, the Vassar community quickly sprung into action. Vassar President John Chenette addressed the planned demonstration in a statement:

But, making lemonade out of lemons, the Vassar community quickly sprung into action. Vassar President John Chenette addressed the planned demonstration in a statement:
In the face of Westboro’s statements, we want to celebrate the inclusiveness of our community and the multitude of backgrounds, interests, and preferences that enrich our experiences. In an effort to coordinate activities that members of the campus and alumnae/i communities are planning, the senior staff of the college has organized a group representative of students, faculty, staff, and alumnae/i to serve as a clearinghouse and sounding board. I know they will foster an array of events that will speak powerfully to our values. One group started a fundraising drive for the Trevor Project, which provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBT youth.” Currently, the campaign has garnered more than $20,000 in donations.
If you have ideas you would like to share with the coordinating group, please send them to its email account, vctogether@vassar.edu.
Judging from the flood of comments so far, they probably cannot respond to everyone; but they will read and consider each contribution as the plans develop. We look forward to sharing more specifics with you soon.

Even if your state considers married same-sex partners equal to their heterosexual counterparts, the Associated Press doesn’t want its writers using the words “husband” and “wife” when referring to them
An internal memo attributed to the venerable wire service initially banned the use of the words for legally-wed gay couples. After allies and advocate cried foul, the AP quickly updated its style guide, considered the grammar Bible by many media outlets and universities, and said the error had been fixed.
But as AmericaBlog points out, the AP now says “husband” and “wife” are still verboten, unless the couple is known to use that term themselves. We can’t remember the last time a straight married couple was asked how they refer to themselves, can you?
From AP’s memo:
What the AP is doing, in essence, is redefining marriage. (Someone call Maggie Gallagher!) If a couple with no legal bond calls themselves “husbands,” they’ll be referred to that way. But a married same-sex couple that didn’t send out a press release on what they want to be referred to as gets called “partners.”
Why not just go with “butt buddies”?

From AP’s memo:
SAME-SEX COUPLES: We were asked how to report about same-sex couples who call themselves “husband” and “wife.” Our view is that such terms may be used in AP content if those involved have regularly used those terms (“Smith is survived by his husband, John Jones”) or in quotes attributed to them. The AP recently wrinkled some noses when it banned the use of the word “homophobia,” purportedly because it was inaccurate and made anti-gay animus sound like a mental illness. But coupled with this latest edict, it smells rather shady.
Generally AP uses couples or partners to describe people in civil unions or same-sex marriages.

Think the new Pope couldn’t possibly be as anti-gay as the outgoing one?
Think again: Cardinal Peter Turkson of Ghana, considered by many to be the top contender to replace Pope Benedict, is hella homophobic.
Turkson, president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, defended Uganda’s odious”Kill the Gays” bill and other legislation oppressing LGBT people.
Last year, the National Catholic Register quoted Turkson as saying that the desire to imprison or execute gays and lesbians was understandable because hatred of gays is so ingrained in Africa: “The intensity of the reaction [to homosexuality] is probably commensurate with tradition.”
And, rather than vociferously decry the persecution of any of God’s children, Turkson claimed there might be a good reason for it:
Just as there’s a sense of a call for rights, there’s also a call to respect culture, of all kinds of people. So, if it’s being stigmatized, in fairness, it’s probably right to find out why it is being stigmatized. He even chastised U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for calling on African countries to end the criminalization of homosexuality:
[The Church pushes] for the rights of prisoners [and] the rights of others, and the last thing we want to do is infringe upon the rights of anyone. But when you’re talking about what’s called ‘an alternative lifestyle,’ are those human rights? [ Ban Ki-moon] needs to recognize there’s a subtle distinction between morality and human rights, and that’s what needs to be clarified.
Turkson is also way off the mark when it comes to combating the AIDS epidemic in Africa: He claims condoms should only be recommended for married couples when one partner is infected, and that abstinence was the key to fighting the epidemic. He also believes that funding for condoms would be better spent on anti-retroviral drugs for those already infected. (In case you’re wondering, it’s not an either-or proposition.)
Should Turkson get the nod, it will be a great tragedy that the first man of color to be named Bishop of Rome will be an inveterate bigot and ally to oppression.
Then again, when you’re talking about Catholic hierarchy, could it be any other way?
