www.euronews.com Germany's Volkswagen and Porsche have completed their long-awaited tie-up. That came one day after Porsche posted a six-month profit of 1.15 billion euros, compared to a 149 million euro profit a year earlier. Once integration is completed, the two expect to gain over 700 million euros in savings in development, purchasing and production and erase Porsche's 2.5 billion euros of debt. Volkswagen's purchase of the second half of Porsche adds the super luxury - and super profitable - sports cars such as the iconic 911 model to its line-up. VW is already Europe's biggest carmaker. It is aiming to be the world number one by 2018. Both companies already cooperate in many areas. VW, which also includes luxury division Audi, makes the bodies for the Cayenne SUV and Panamera coupe, Porsche's two best-selling vehicles. They will jointly develop Porsche's next model, the Macan compact SUV, due to hit showrooms in 2014. *Long road to merger* The two manufacturers had first agreed a full merger in August 2009, after Porsche racked up more than 10 billion euros of debt in a failed attempt to take over VW, sparking feuds among the Porsche and Piech family dynasties. VW bought 49.9 percent of Porsche's sports car operations in December 2009 for 3.9 billion euros and had sought to acquire the remainder through a share-swap with the holding company. The car makers dropped the merger plan last year because of US and German investor lawsuits accusing Porsche of covertly ...

Spanish authorities say they have arrested three suspected members of al-Qaida. Spanish Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz told reporters Thursday that there was a "clear indication" that those detained could have been planning an attack in Spain or Europe. Authorities accuse the men of storing explosives that the minister said would be especially damaging with shrapnel and could even destroy an entire bus. Officials describe the suspects as being from the Caucasus region, ...

LONDON — South Africa is the lone African gold winner so far at this year's Olympics, with three medals, but that is not too surprising. More than half of sub-Saharan African countries have never won gold, and many have never won a single Olympic medal. With a few swift strokes, a pair of rowers managed to triple South Africa's Olympic medal count by winning the nation its third gold in this year's Games. That result put South Africa in an elite, and lonely, group on its own ...

U.S. officials say the Obama administration is giving $12 million in new humanitarian aid for beleaguered Syrian civilians as a civil war rages between rebels and the Assad regime in Aleppo and elsewhere.

AL-MARJ, Lebanon (Reuters) - Messages broadcast from mosque loudspeakers warned residents of Damascus neighborhoods to leave their homes and helicopter gunships spitting bullets made sure they heeded the call. Now home for 18 families from the Syrian capital is a school building in Lebanon's Bekaa Vally. But they claim they have been left to their fate by Lebanese authorities and international aid agencies. And when school restarts after the summer vacation, they have no idea where they will go. ...

LONDON (Reuters) - The Syrian army's brisk recapture of parts of Damascus is unlikely to be repeated in Aleppo, where open rebel supply lines, hard-to-assail narrow streets and an apparent lack of elite manpower will limit its commanders' options. The struggle in parts of Aleppo held by insurgents is likely to be more protracted than last month's battles in the capital, inflicting further bloodshed and damage on Syria's largest city and driving more of the population out, analysts say. ...

Like many businesses, Kellogg is contending with rising commodity costs and weakness in Europe, which pushed its net income 12 percent lower in the second quarter. But the company's one-two punch of breakfast goods and snacks gave a lift to its revenue, driven by sales of Pop-Tarts and strength in North America.

It got a standing ovation. Then again, it was a captive audience.

Ann Romney, the wife of the U.S. Republican presidential candidate, says she was "thrilled do death" by the performance her horse Rafalca turned in at the Olympics dressage competition.

Fault Lines - Puerto Rico: The fiscal experiment

Fault Lines - Puerto Rico: The fiscal experiment Dozens of university students are arrested for demonstrating against a tuition hike. But Puerto Rico Gov. Luis Fortuno remains steadfast in charging students more to help close a $3.2 billion budget gap. The students' fight is representative of a larger debate in Puerto...
Rico, and in the US, about how to solve a severe budget crisis -- and at what cost. Gov. Fortuno, a hawkish fiscal conservative, laid off 20000 government workers in 2009, and suspended all labor negotiations, just like governors on the US mainland are doing today. But two years later Puerto Rico's labor unions are still scrambling to reorganize a largely unemployed population -- nearly 17 percent. Puerto Rico is in its fifth year of recession, and expected to be the world's slowest growing economy if its situation doesn't improve. At question is the degree of economic and social responsibility the US has to its commonwealth state. Fault Lines travels to Puerto Rico to investigate America's legacy as the Island's ruler, and the harsh economic policies that are being imposed on the people who live there. This episode of Fault Lines, "Puerto Rico: The Fiscal Experiment" first aired June 27, 2011 on Al Jazeera English. english.aljazeera.net Follow us on Twitter: twitter.com Follow us on Facebook: facebook.com Follow us on Tumblr: ajfaultlines.tumblr.com See all episodes of Fault Lines www.youtube.com Meet the Fault Lines staff: www.youtube.com From: AlJazeeraEnglish Views: 65338 1032 ratingsTime: 23:29 More in Shows

s, the last Puerto Rican boxer to win an Olympic medal in 1996, the nation's young team is targeting further glory. Ortiz Marcano, who celebrated his 18th birthday last week, is one of four teenagers in the five-man Puerto Rican squad. The team's fifth member, Middle Weight Enrique Collazo, has already been knocked out of the tournament. He certainly relished his Olympic debut, arriving in the ring with a huge smile on his face and proceeding to showcase a series of flashy moves as he took apart his opponent, establishing an 8-1 lead within three minutes. Ortiz Marcano said: 'I was smiling going into the ring and coming out of the ring because that is how I feel and I don't want to change anything. I told my corner they had to keep smiling too. I fought well and I have a lot more to come.' Spain's world number seven Jose de la Nieve Linares was surprised 14-11 by Carlos Quipo Pilataxi of Ecuador. The veteran Spaniard paid the price for a sluggish first round and struggled to match his opponent's workrate. Earlier in the Light Fly Weight division, Cuba's Yosbany Veitia Soto scored the biggest win in the competition so far as he overcame Australia's Billy Ward 26-4.
