New York City Welcomes Spanish Fashion

The Spanish SoHo Mile once again put the New York City spotlight back on the Iberian nation’s fashion industry, whose stores are increasingly numerous in that neighborhood of Lower Manhattan. Camper, Mango, Uno de 50, Tous, Beiñ and Tierra were the brands that participated in the eighth edition of the fashion event, in which discounts of up to 20 percent, cava (sparkling wine), wine, tapas and DJs drew the customers and curiosity seekers Thursday evening. The goal of the Spanish SoHo Mile is to continue “promoting the expansion of Spanish fashion in New York,” a city that is a gateway to the rest of the United States, according to Gema Cortijo, executive director of the Spain-U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which organized the event. She noted that in this edition special emphasis was placed on promoting the main social-networking sites and blogs, with four of the most prominent U.S. fashion bloggers taking part in the event. For future editions, Cortijo said plans are in the works to expand the event to all of Manhattan, given the growing number of Spanish brand stores in different parts of the island. Spanish clothing, footwear and accessory brands have accelerated the opening of more stores in New York City, as well as in other markets amenable to its products, such as California and Florida. The latest Spanish fashion company to open a store in New York City was Pikolinos, a footwear brand that launched a “pop-up” that will only be open for three months to promote its products, which are already being sold in different shoe stores in the Big Apple.

Archaeologists Say 400 Animal Species Were Offered to Gods in Tenochtitlan

Mexican archaeologists have identified more than 400 animal species in some 60 offerings made to the gods at the Great Temple of Tenochtitlan, now Mexico City, including molluscs, fish, birds, reptiles and mammals, the National Institute of Anthropology and History, or INAH, said. The scientists have recovered, “for example, fish from coral reefs in the Atlantic Ocean, reptiles including crocodiles, snakes and turtles, as well as birds like toucans and quetzals, and large mammals from the tropics like the jaguar,” INAH biologist Norma Valentin Maldonado said Friday. “Such fauna has been found in sacrifices to the rain god Tlaloc and to Huitzilopochtli, god of war, from the fourth to the seventh stages (1440-1520) of the Great Temple’s construction. The animals are alway exotic species, spectacularly beautiful, or with rough, spiny hides, sometimes dangerous or venomous,” she said. Valentin said that several of the animals were the object of a kind of ancient taxidermy, in which some of the bones were left inside to maintain the shape of the skin and keep it from ripping. As for the large mammals, she said that around six wolves, two jaguars, 13 pumas and a single bone from the back leg of a wildcat have been identified and studied. According to the expert, “molluscs have the greatest presence in the Mexica offerings; in just about all the sacrifices at least one of them is found, so that some 300 species have been reported in the Great Temple from both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.” “Next in abundance are 60 fish species, chiefly from coral reefs,” she said. The ritual use of all these animal species and their symbolism will be presented beginning June 8 at a round of conferences at the recently opened Gallery 6 “Flora and Fauna” in the Great Temple, adjacent to the capital’s principal square, the Zocalo.

BLOG DEL NARCO: Baby Faced Brute Arrested as Ringleader of Viscous Kidnapping Ring (VIDEO)

Mexican officials in Aguascalientes, Mexico have confirmed the capture and arrest of Jose Omar Esquivel Romero – also known as “El Canario” or “El Guero”. “El Guero”, 23, is thought to be the leader of a viscous kidnapping ring operating out of Mexico City.  The Camacho gang has been tied to several murders and over 10 kidnappings where the victims were tortured.  It is believed Romero’s last kidnapping victim was an 8-year-old boy whose fingers were cut off so ransom could be paid faster.  Authorities continue to search for other victims thought to be buried somewhere in Mexico City. Details on the arrest of “El Guero” are slim since authorities fear The Camacho gang will try to rescue him.  This past March, Romero was arrested with six gang members but eluded arrested when he held off local authorities with a machine gun. This time Romero did not put up a fight with authorities and was found with no weapons on him. The baby-faced brute hails from the town of Santo Tomas Ajusco outside of Mexico City and has a feared reputation for his brutality and intimidation.  It is thought he was hiding out in Aguascalientes but that he had not committed any crimes there.  Authorities are investigating if “El Guero” had any narco affiliations or if he was operating solo and for mere profit versus to gain drug distribution routes through kidnapping.

Mexican President Stresses Need to Modernize Pemex

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto reaffirmed his commitment to maintain Petroleos Mexicanos as a state-owned company, but also stressed the need to modernize and transform the world’s No. 5 oil producer. “If we want to meet and surpass the challenges of the 21st century, we can’t continue operating with frameworks and methods from last century,” the head of state said in a speech in the western city of Mazatlan. Pemex employs some 160,000 people and the taxes it pays account for roughly 40 percent of Mexico’s national budget. The company “is and will continue to be the basic patrimony of all Mexicans. The nation will continue to exercise full sovereignty” over its hydrocarbon resources, he added. That principle is enshrined in Mexico’s constitution, although leftist politicians have warned that Peña Nieto’s government plans to allow private companies to acquire a stake in Pemex, a possibility Mexican authorities have periodically denied. “Pemex will not be sold or privatized,” Peña Nieto said Friday. But he said the state-owned company “needs to be strengthened and modernized” to face the challenges of a modern world and “continue to be the engine of the country’s development.” To that end, he said the company needed to improve “its model of efficiency, transparency and accountability,” as well as “free up its potential in terms of investment and innovation.” “If we mobilize and transform Pemex, we’ll mobilize and transform Mexico,” the president added. Pemex, the world’s fifth-leading oil producer, has a monopoly on the production of hydrocarbons (crude and natural gas) and refined products in Mexico. A recent oil sector overhaul, however, gave the oil monopoly - created when the country’s oil industry was nationalized in 1938 - more freedom to undertake projects with private firms, which are hired under incentive-based service contracts. Though production has recently stabilized and the country said last year it had achieved a reserve-replacement ratio of 100 percent, Mexico’s output has suffered from the natural decline of the once-super giant Cantarell offshore field and a lack of sufficient investment. In addition to exploring deep-water areas in the Gulf of Mexico, Pemex also is looking to boost energy production by assessing its non-conventional reserves.
