The Hill: Fortuño ‘sleeper pick’ for VP – Caribbean Business - 16/04/12
Puerto Rico Gov. Luis Fortuño is a “sleeper pick” to be the running mate for presumptive Republican Party presidential candidate Mitt Romney, according to a report in The Hill.
The Washington, D.C.-based political news outlet cites GOP strategists who say Fortuño as a vice presidential pick could help the Republican Party’s bid to lure Latino voters.
Fortuño, who heads the island’s New Progressive Party, is running for a second term in La Fortaleza.
Considered a rising star in the GOP, Fortuño endorsed Romney ahead of the crucial Florida primary in February. The governor cited the former Massachusetts’ governor’s pledge to pursue statehood for Puerto Rico if that option wins a status plebiscite in November.
The Hill noted that front-runner Romney has kept his cards close to his chest on vice presidential prospects, saying that it would be “presumptuous” to think about it before winning the nomination. But in a recent interview with Newsmax, he described Fortuño as “a solid conservative and a firm leader.” He also dubbed Fortuño “one of the great leaders of our party.”
Romney has tapped a longtime adviser to begin his search for a vice presidential candidate.
Romney said Monday that Beth Myers is in charge of "selection and vetting and analysis."
“I have selected someone who has been a counselor of mine for a number of years, Beth Myers. She was my chief of staff when I was governor,” Romney said during an interview with Diane Sawyer of ABC News outside Fenway Park in Boston.
Romney is moving forward as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee after rival Rick Santorum suspended his campaign last week.
Myers was Romney's chief of staff when he was Massachusetts governor. She currently is a senior adviser on his presidential campaign.
When asked about Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Romney said “he’s one of the terrific leaders in our party.”
“But I think it’s way too early to begin narrowing down who the potential vice presidential nominees might be,” he said. “But we’re beginning that process, we'll talk about a lot of folks, and then go through the kind of vetting and review process that you have to go through to make sure whoever you select will pass the evaluation that's required by the American people.”
Romney wouldn’t offer any hints as to when the months-long process would end.
“We do have a deadline in mind as to when I’d like to be able to reach a decision but I'm not giving you that date at this stage,” he said in the interview, adding that it would “certainly” happen before the Republican National Convention in late August.

I think it's a huge honor for all Puerto Ricans. For the 1st time in history, included in the long list of potential nominees for the VP slot of one of the 2 major national parties.
While he could not directly deliver any electoral votes, he could tip the scales in a close race in swing states, such as Florida and Ohio, states with significant PRican populations. Whoever wins FL AND OH wins the presidency.
Having said that, the conservatism of the GOP virtually precludes Romney from picking LGF.
I'm not sure that the extremist in the GOP would like it to be advertised that LGF's successes have a lot to do with discarding some Republican ideas and picking some non-Republican ideas.
When he laid off 12,505 non-essential public servants, a Republican idea, he gave them a generous severance package, a Democratic idea, and immunized teachers and police from layoffs, another Dem idea.
The GOP wants to sell Republican ideas, not the fact that consensus building is a better strategy.
While LGF wants to strengthen borders, a Republican ideas, he openly favors Obama's immigration policy, a no-no in the GOP.

Puerto Ricans: Great Americans - Great Hispanics deserve permanent union - Puerto Rico Daily Sun
February 18, 2012: It all came clear to me why the letters to the editor in the Star are always attacking me, Mike Herrick, Kenneth McClintock and Sherman Wildman and his staff at WOSO. We are honest, upfront, highly vocal supporters of statehood for Puerto Rico. Today, the Star revealed that it is against any kind of permanent union with the United States. Instead the the Star is editorially for independence for Puerto Rico. They reprinted as a STAR EDITORIAL the notorious editorial by Allan Wall which appeared in V Dare Foundation’s official publication. Don’t be misled by the title “Viva Puerto Rico! Free Puerto Rico (And The U.S.) Now!” -- Who is rolling the spit balls fired by the same small clique of independentisas in the Star’s letters to the editor?
If you love both Puerto Rico and the United States, this dishonest editorial will make you very angry. Read it carefully with an open mind.
I don’t agree with the main premise of this V Dare editorial now adopted as a Star editorial. It is obvious that Allan Wall has not lived among Puerto Ricans in either the United States or on the Island of Puerto Rico as I have. .
Most of my Puerto Rican friends, who I know from living in Puerto Rico, are BOTH very Puerto Rican while at the same time very American. They can live both cultures at the same time. There is no conflict! I think it would be arrogant and unfair for me or any other Yankee-type to judge negatively the Americanism or Puerto Ricanism of the Puerto Rican people as a cultural group. I do not like the broad brush strokes of this editorial.
I do know that several years ago that I visited the large National Cemetery in Bayamon. I started to read the thousands of head stones listing the names of the fallen and the time they served their country the United States. I started to cry for being so arrogant to judge or question Puerto Ricans such as those buried in that hallow ground. It was a moment of truth for me. I turned to a Puerto Rican friend who was on his knees praying at his father’s grave. I ask my friend to forgive me for questioning Puerto Ricans’ patriotism.

Is corporate greed by foreign companies harming American citizens?
I emailed a copy of this letter to the Daily Sun VOICES to my friend who was harmed by Hyundai not providing an essential part on time. What is really sad is that this essential part only costs $150 and there were many in Hyundai’s parts inventory. Because it took Hyundai eight weeks to supply this part my friend needed, he had to pay $800 extra for car rental. He is a young guy who graduated with high grades from Inter-American University. He has a very limited income. This does not include his other costs in constantly checking for the part’s delivery and the emotional pain to my friend and his loved ones. I hope someone will bring this corporate greed by a foreign company harming an American citizen to President Barack Obama’s attention. Is this an isolated case or does it happen often harming American citizens buying foreign cars?
For want of a nail
For want of a nail the shoe was lost.
For want of a shoe the horse was lost.
For want of a horse the rider was lost.
For want of a rider the battle was lost.
For want of a battle the kingdom was lost.
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.

Has the Puerto Rico Daily Sun cut off the Star's source for hate letters?
No letters in today’s Puerto Rico Daily Sun – Tuesday – April 17, 2012. Almost two weeks of no letters. This is one of my favorite sections of the Daily Sun.
I wonder if the Puerto Rico Daily Sun is purposely not publishing letters to the editor in order that The San Juan Star's small clique of disgusting hate letter writers have no source to feed on for their hate letters. It is almost two weeks that the Daily Sun has not published letters from readers.
These haters in the Star love to write personal insults against anyone who is pro-America. These haters will seize on respectful letters in the Daily Sun to distort and insult in every possible way. The letters that they write for The San Juan Star is sick venom and journalism at its worse.
Today's San Juan Star is the complete opposite of the wonderful, Pulitzer prize wining original Star. It sure ain't like the one in "The Rum Diary" movie.
Why does the honorable and wonderful New York Times allow their news service to be in this second generation of The San Juan Star? The Times is in no way like The San Juan Star. The NYT has the highest standards for professionalism and journalism ethics. It should associate with it own kind of honorable journalists and publishers.

The Puerto Rico Daily Sun has not published letters in over a week now. Today, in the San Juan Star there was a hate letter attacking and distorting the reality of the Daily Sun. It mentioned in hostile terms the Daily Sun to be Script-Howard right-wing rantings. It went on and on as to how bad the Daily Sun is and against the people, etc. It and other letters also implied that the other PR newspapers are no good either. These pro-Star hate letters state that the Star is the only decent newspaper in Puerto Rico. Puerto Ricans should believe in the Star and not in the Daily Sun.
I would think by now that most Puerto Ricans will realize that the Star is a terrible newspaper and not worth 54 cents to buy. I do not understand why The New York Times allows their news and comments to be published in the Star. Doesn't the NYT check out this unreliable, unethical rag?
This Star is a shooting star that should burn out and deep six.
