SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (International News Service) Cardinal Luis Aponte Martinez died today at age 89 after more than a month in hospital Mutual Aid in Rio Piedras.
The priest, born on August 4, 1922 in Lajas and who had gone to his health condition, in mid-March suffered a urinary tract infection, which had caused his body retain fluids.
It was reported that the Archbishop of San Juan, Roberto Gonzalez Nieves, will hold a press conference this morning.

With an MBA from Boston University and a doctoral seminar in St. Leo, Florida, the Puerto Rican religious ordained a priest in San German in April 1950.
During the decade of the 50 was superintendent of Catholic schools for the Diocese of Ponce and chancellor of the Pontifical Catholic University.
In October 1962, Aponte Martinez was appointed auxiliary bishop of Ponce. Two years later, the Holy See appointed him archbishop of San Juan.
Under that charge was chairman of the Committee of Economic Affairs of the Latin American Episcopal Council (CELAM) and appeared in two conclaves of the Vatican where popes are elected John Paul I and John Paul II.
Aponte Martinez was the highest religious authority of the island to receive the Pope John Paul II during his visit to the island in 1984. He retired from the Archdiocese of San Juan in 1999.
