Despite urging by Obama, Illinois House adjourns without vote on gay marriage (with video)

BY REGINA GARCIA CANO, ASSOCIATED PRESS
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Despite urging from President Barack Obama in his home state and fierce on-the-ground campaigning, a legislative measure that would have made Illinois the 13th state to allow same-sex couples to marry didn't rally enough support from lawmakers in the House.
The bill's sponsor, Democratic Rep. Greg Harris, gave an emotional testimony before lawmakers, explaining that he simply didn't have the 60 votes the measure needed to pass and wouldn't be calling it for a vote. For weeks, he'd been furiously lobbying his colleagues, including members of the House Black Caucus.
"Several of my colleagues have indicated they would not be willing to cast a vote on this legislation today ... and I've never been sadder to accept such request," he said. "They asked me for time to go back to their districts and reach out to their minds and hearts."
Legislators applauded him after the speech.
Obama's home state was lining up to become the 13th to approve same-sex marriage after months of arduous and sometimes elusive lobbying efforts by gay-rights advocates and opponents. The state's Senate approved the measure on Valentine's Day, and Gov. Pat Quinn, a Chicago Democrat, had pledged to sign it into law.

Lutheran assembly elects first openly gay bishop

ASSOCIATED PRESS
LOS ANGELES -- The Evangelical Lutheran Church of America has elected its first openly gay bishop.
In a press release, church officials say Rev. R. Guy Erwin was selected for a six-year term Friday at a church annual assembly.
The church's rules changed in 2009 to allow gays and lesbians to be ordained in the nation's largest Lutheran denomination.
Erwin currently serves as a pastor at Faith Lutheran Church and a professor of Lutheran Confessional Theology at California Lutheran University.
Officials say the "partnered gay man" is also the first Native American to be elected. Erwin is part Osage Indian.

From GLAAD:
In a historic move, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) has elected its first-ever openly gay bishop. The Rev. Dr. R. Guy Erwin has been elected to a six-year term to the Southwest California Synod, which encompasses the greater Los Angeles area. GLAAD is working with Dr. Erwin and LGBT advocacy organizations within the Lutheran Church to bring media attention to this historic election for the denomination.
This is a significant step for the ELCA, who, until 2009, had banned clergy in same-gender relationships. Prior to 2009, hundreds of gay and lesbian clergy were forced out of congregations or served under secrecy. Hundreds of seminary students were not granted ordination, simply for being gay. Many left the denomination to more welcoming denominations or to join a roster of Lutheran pastors who refused to comply with the policy.

Ancient Phoenicia's photo

Antinous the Gay God shared Ancient Phoenicia's photo.
Phoenicans built the first war galleys between 1500-1200 BC and were the best seafarers and ship builders of the ancient world. They had been at sea for some time before the Greeks and were already well established and experienced sailors.
Early galleys were simple ships with single levels of oarsmen, but the galley would be developed over the next 2000 years, to go on and become the dominant fighting ship of the eastern Mediterranean.
