GOP must lead on immigration, not be dragged by the far rightby jpicard@thehill.com (Cesar Vargas)
Recently, the underpinnings of one of the most popular immigration policies in years were attacked by immigration hawk Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa).
Just as the Republican party was making headway with diverse voters, the GOP shot themselves in the foot by passing King’s amendment that lost them ground with Latino voters. The amendment would defund President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), a policy that protects “DREAMers” from deportation. Rather than reject the toxic amendment, Republican leadership was dragged to the far right by passing it with overwhelming Republican votes.
