Spire permanently installed on new WTC tower

NEW YORKThe silver spire topping New York City's One World Trade Center has been fully installed on the building's roof.
It brings the iconic structure to its full, symbolic height of 1,776 feet. The addition makes the structure the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says the spire's installation was completed Friday morning. Construction workers applauded the milestone.
Pieces of the spire (which weighs 758 tons) were transported to the roof of the building last week, but weather delayed its installation.
The building's height is symbolic of the year 1776, when the U.S. declared its independence.
The 408-foot spire will serve as a world-class broadcast antenna. An LED-powered light emanating from it will be seen from miles away.
The new tower is at the northwest corner of the World Trade Center site, which is well on its way to reconstruction with the 72-story Four World Trade Center and other buildings.
One World Trade Center, with an observation deck, is scheduled to open in 2014.

Señor Arzobispo, desde que usted llegó a esta bendita tierra azotada por el crimen, la corrupción en los sectores gubernamental, privado y eclesiástico; por el desempleo, la pobreza, la politización de las instituciones gubernamentales, civiles y, por qué no decirlo, de las iglesias como la suya también, la falta de valores, el alcoholismo, drogadicción, la alta tasa de divorcios, la intolerancia y, entre otras, la pederastia, de la cual usted debe conocer muy bien desde sus días en Boston con el cardenal Bernard Law, se ha dedicado única y exclusivamente a enfatizar lo que nos divide como Pueblo; la agenda ideológica y de falsa moral que usted vomita desde el púlpito, y no lo que nos une; el amor al prójimo. O sea, el “ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo”, que, a mi juicio, es la mejor definición de lo que significa ser cristiano, siempre está ausente en sus palabras.
Durante todos estos años su voz sobre asuntos de suma trascendencia para la sociedad, como es el matrimonio tradicional y cristiano, base sagrada de nuestro Pueblo como sociedad y como cultura centenaria, ha sido débil, por no decir apenas audible. Sabiendo usted que detrás de esa movida de los grupos homosexuales y lésbicos hay una agenda ideológica, sus pronunciamientos sobre el matrimonio y la defensa del mismo son pro forma. No hay sinceridad, ni amor en sus palabras, ni intención alguna de fortalecer la –desde hace años– rota familia puertorriqueña.
Por otro lado, sus acciones son contradictorias y, peor aún, adolecen de falta de transparencia. Su reacción a no seguir administrando un Head Start porque los empleados del mismo querían organizarse sindicalmente estremeció a muchos. Teniendo el movimiento obrero, desde sus orígenes, una filosofía con base cristiana, según el teólogo Leonardo Boff, usted despachó el asunto y se lavó las manos como Pilatos. Su acción sirvió de minibiografía que develó lo que realmente usted es; un político con indumentaria de líder religioso que, a Dios gracias, sabemos no es su vocación.
Como si esto no fuera suficiente, usted erigió un supuesto ‘altar de la patria’, como si las patrias necesitaran altares. Mi esposa tiene tres patrias y eso no le afecta su conciencia cristiana ni su puertorriqueñidad. Sin embargo, es la pedofilia –que alegadamente dicen usted encubrió de manera criminal–, la que asusta más al Pueblo y genera total desconfianza hacia usted. Nunca hemos escuchado pronunciamientos suyos contra esta aberración moral y crimen contra el cuerpo y espíritu inocente de muchos niños. ¿Por qué? ¿Qué usted esconde?
Por el amor de Dios, Arzobispo, basta ya. Suplico no le haga más daño a nuestro Pueblo. Arzobispo, por favor, váyase.

In 1898, the United States colonized Puerto Rico as part of the Spanish American War.

 For 114 years the people of Puerto Rico have maintained a
polarizing debate on the STATUS ISSUE that has been front and center of the political discourse on the Island. Puerto Ricans (American citizens since 1917) constantly
dispute between the options of Statehood, Independence and the current status known in the Island as E.L.A.

 On November 6, 2012 the people of Puerto Rico held the fourth plebiscite in the Island's history to try to redefine the political relationship with the United States.

 Weeks before the plebiscite vote, two-time EMMY Award winner Juan Agustín Márquez
traveled back to his homeland and interviewed leading politicians, historians, sociologists, and economists to dissect the status debate in a multilayered conversation about the pros and cons of each option on the ballot.

 His mission: To explain the status debate to the people of the United States, Congress and the President, and bring the American people up to date on this century old question:

 Will there be a change in status in America's Last Colony?

The best rides and wipeouts are honoured at the annual Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards ceremony. Hawaiian surfer Shane Dorian walked away with one of the sport's most-prized accolades, winning the Ride of the Year award for the monumental wave he successfully paddled into and surfed at Jaws, Maui, last October.

Dorian's feat edged out other Billabong XXL Ride of the Year nominees including Californian surfers Shawn Dollar, Greg Long and fellow Hawaiians Dave Wassel and Reef McIntosh who both surfed memorable waves during an historic swell in Fiji in June 2012. Report by Matt Blake.
