AP Sources: Obama OK punting gay immigration idea

BY JULIE PACE, AP WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT

WASHINGTON -- Two people familiar with the Senate immigration deliberations say the White House has suggested to Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy that it would be best to put off a controversy over gay marriage until a bill goes before the full Senate.

President Barack Obama backs the proposal to give equal treatment to gays and lesbians, but is unlikely to veto a broad immigration bill that does not include the provision.

Leahy, the Democratic chair of the Judiciary Committee, has not yet said whether he will seek a vote on the provision in committee. He could raise the issue again if the bill goes before the full Senate.

The people familiar with the deliberations were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and insisted on anonymity. The White House had no comment.

Just a few hours after yesterday's rally against homophobic attacks in the West Village, there were two more reports of anti-gay attacks in the city. A gay nightlife promoter was attacked in the East Village and a gay couple got into an altercation in SoHo a few hours later. What is going on!?
A French historian and radical right activist took his own life today in front of the Notre Dame Cathedral and crowds of tourists when he shot himself in what was reported as an anti-gay marriage statement. Fred Phelps Jr. of the Westboro Baptist Church continues to prove that he has absolutely no shame as he blamed yesterday's horrific tornado in Oklahoma on Jason Collins' coming out. Another anti-gay attack took place less early Tuesday morning in NYC's Soho neighboorhood, CBS New York reports:

The incident happened around 5:20 a.m. Tuesday. Police said the couple, ages 41 and 42, were walking on Broadway near Prince Street when two men began yelling anti-gay slurs.

A physical altercation ensued and one of the victims suffered an eye injury, police said.

Fabian Ortiz and Pedro Jiminez were arrested and are being charged with third degree assault as a hate crime, police said.
