Puerto Rico is among the world’s top 30 happiest countries and ranks higher than all other Caribbean islands, according to a new United Nations report.
The World Happiness Report, released at a UN conference this week, places Puerto Rico in the 27th spot, ahead of Trinidad & Tobago (38), Jamaica (40), Cuba (69) and the Dominican Republic (93).
The report says Puerto Rico is the sixth happiest place in all of Latin America behind Costa Rica (12), Venezuela (19), Panama (20), Mexico (23), and Brazil (25).
Denmark tops the list, followed by Finland, Norway, The Netherlands, Canada, Switzerland, Sweden, New Zealand, Australia, Ireland and the United States.
The 10 least happy countries were listed as Togo, Benin, Central African Republic, Sierra Leone, Burundi, Comoros, Haiti, Tanzania, Congo (Brazzaville) and Bulgaria.
The UN conference titled “Happiness and Well-being: Defining a New Economic Paradigm” brought together in New York hundreds of representatives of governments - including Costa Rican President Laura Chincilla - academics and other civic leaders to discuss the issue.
Although wealthy nations like Denmark, Norway, Finland and The Netherlands lead the rankings of happiest countries and poor nations like Togo, Benin, Central African Republic and Sierra Leone rank among the least happy, the report noted that social factors such as the strength of social support, the absence of corruption and thedegree of personal freedom were more important than wealth.
Jeffery Sachs, a prominent development economist at Columbia University in New York who edited the World Happiness Report along with John Helliwell and Richard Layard, said happiness could be achieved independent of economic well-being as measured by a country's gross national product.
“GNP (gross national product) by itself does not promote happiness,” Sachs told the conference.
[Continue in Extended Entry section.]
“The US has had a three-time increase of GNP per capita since 1960 but the happiness needle hasn’t budged. Other countries have pursued other policies and achieved much greater gains of happiness, even at much lower levels of per capita income.”

Japan’s vice-minister for foreign affairs, Joe Nakano, told the conference this was certainly true in his own country.

“A number of recent studies have shown that, in many developed countries, including Japan, happiness is not proportional to economic wealth,” Nakano said.

“This finding, often called the Paradox of Happiness, has given rise to international discussion on how to enhance individual well-being through government policies.”

The conference was convened by Bhutan, which tops Asia in the first World Happiness Report. The tiny Himalayan nation convened the meeting seeking to develop a new economic model based on principles of happiness and wellbeing.

The report also listed a number of practical suggestions for governments to promote happiness among their citizens, including helping people meet their basic needs, reinforcing social systems, implementing active labor policies, improving mental health services, promoting compassion, altruism and honesty, and helping the public resist hyper-commercialism.

Comments

I agree with this report. I retired in       Puerto Rico in 1986. I have never been more happy than living in Puerto       Rico. Two main reasons make Puerto Rico a happy place for me:(1) loving       people who are beautiful inside as well as outside.(2) Outstanding climate       and weather.
Puerto       Rico is also scenically beautiful. I wish there was some kind of control       to eliminate or at least reduce drastically the ugly billboards along the       scenic route between San Juan and Ponce. Take away the billboards and       Puerto Rico will have another wonder of the world as beautiful as the       Grand Canyon. Protect this scenic route as we protect El       Yunge.

Sobbing Chavez Pleads for Life at Catholic Mass in Home State

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavezwiped tears from his face as he pleaded for life in his fight against an undisclosed cancer at a Catholic mass in his home state of Barinas.
Chavez, speaking yesterday at the mass held for his health and broadcast on state television, said cancer is a “real threat” that takes many lives and that he has faith that he will win the fight against the disease.

Chavez, who returned April 4 from Cuba where he underwent a second round of radiation therapy, said he shed tears when he felt the hands of his parents, Hugo and Elena, touch him during the mass. His siblings also attended the service.
“If this was necessary, may it be welcome,” Chavez said, who wore a white T-shirt under a blue and white track suit.“But I ask God to give me life, however painful. I can carry 100 crosses, your crown of thorns, but don’t take me yet. I still have things to do.”
Chavez, who has undergone three operations as part of his treatment since June, will seek re-election in October in a bid to extend his 13-year rule until 2019. The government hasn’t disclosed any succession plans in case Chavez, 57, isn’t healthy enough to participate in the elections.
He may travel to Brazil for medical treatment after having a reaction to the radiation therapy, Merval Pereira, a columnist for O Globo newspaper reported yesterday, without saying where he got the information.

No Trip Planned

A spokeswoman at Venezuela’s Information Ministry, who isn’t authorized to comment, said Chavez didn’t have a trip to Brazil on his agenda.
Chavez is also having intestinal problems, which might be a sign the cancer is spreading, Pereira added.
Brazilian and Venezuelan doctors have clashed with Cubans on the medical team over whether radiation therapy is the appropriate treatment for Chavez, Nelson Bocaranda, a journalist who frequently reports developments on the president’s health in absence of details from the government, wrote yesterday on his blog.
Chavez received a phone call from former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on April 3 in which the Venezuelan leader said he would like to visit Brazil soon to meet with Lula and President Dilma Rousseff, Venezuela’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement sent by e-mail.
Chavez said on April 4 his body had no adverse reactions from the radiation treatment and that all tests showed his recovery was going well after arriving in Venezuela.

Puerto Rico is among the world's top 30 happiest countries and ranks higher than all other Caribbean islands, according to a new United Nations report.
The UN conference titled "Happiness and Well-being: Defining a New Economic Paradigm" brought together in New York hundreds of representatives of governments - including Costa Rican President Laura Chincilla - academics and other civic leaders to discuss the issue.
Although wealthy nations like Denmark, Norway, Finland and The Netherlands lead the rankings of happiest countries and poor nations like Togo, Benin, Central African Republic and Sierra Leone rank among the least happy, the report noted that social factors such as the strength of social support, the absence of corruption and the degree of personal freedom were more important than wealth.
Jeffery Sachs, a prominent development economist at Columbia University in New York who edited the World Happiness Report along with John Helliwell and Richard Layard, said happiness could be achieved independent of economic well-being as measured by a country's gross national product.
"GNP (gross national product) by itself does not promote happiness," Sachs told the conference.
