Pitchman: Russia's Putin shows off his English

https://twitter.com/__LatestNews__
Thousands of anti-government protesters took to Moscow's streets Wednesday demanding President Vladimir Putin's resignation Wednesday with chants of "Russia without Putin!"
But the longtime Russian leader showed no sign of going anywhere. He marked Wednesday's national holiday "Russia Day" by being elected head of the Popular Front, a new loyalist political movement designed to broaden his power base.
But what was really making waves in Russia was a new viral video of Putin. In it the Russian president, so often portrayed as tough and in control, stood uncomfortably in front of a camera and awkwardly spoke English.
The Russian leader, now in his third term as president, has rarely spoken publicly in English. More often at international events he has insisted that he should follow the official protocol and speak in his native language -- even an interview with the Kremlin-owned English language Russia Today channel on Tuesday was conducted in Russian.
The new video addresses delegates for the International Exhibition Bureau in a bid to make Russia's fourth largest city, Yekaterinburg, the Expo 2020 host.
The Expo is an international event that would likely draw millions of visitors to Russia.
In the pitch he made standing in a gilded room as the camera slowly inched closer, Putin said: "I am confident we shall welcome guest from over 150 nations of the world with pride and dignity. Now, once again, I would like to make this very clear: Russia guarantees to fulfill the complete range of requirements set by the International Expositions Bureau."
Putin, who also speaks fluent German, has refrained from speaking English in public, with some notable exceptions.
In 2007, he presented the Sochi Olympics bid to the Olympic Committee in English at an event in Guatemala. And his rendition of the Fats Domino classic "Blueberry Hill" at a charity event in 2010 had the assembled group of celebrities, from Goldie Hawn to Kevin Costner and Sharon Stone, swinging.
Both videos became Internet sensations.
But unlike the 2007 event, Putin's address on Wednesday was performed for the cameras and followed a much discussed televised announcement last week, when Putin confirmed he no longer lived with his wife, and that he was getting a divorce.

Mike Nova comments: Vovchick, we should work on our accents, sweety. You sound like you just came back from taiga in Siberia.

God works in strange and mysterious ways... Voices / Puerto Rico Daily Sun - Aug. 23, 2010

Ricky Martin’s memoir, entitled Me and Yo in English and Spanish, respectively, will be published on November 2. The hardcover book will be published from Celebra, a division of Penguin Group. Among the topics to be discussed in the book are Martin’s coming to terms with his sexuality, his experiences in early childhood and his experiences in his former boy band, Menudo.
I firmly believe that God accepts and loves LGBTT people as he does all his creations. I am convinced that Ricky Martin is an instrument of God to tell the world that it is mostly self-serving political and religious powerbrokers who are homophobic in Puerto Rico. My experience is that most Puerto Ricans accept and love gay people.
I will rush out and buy Ricky's book as soon as it is available in Puerto Rico. It takes a lot of courage and honesty for Ricky to admit to the world that he is gay. I believe he is God's instrument to do away with homophobia on the Enchanted Island. Ricky Martin could end up being a powerful force for human rights for LGBTT people and other minorities in Puerto Rico -- in fact, throughout the world.
I hope he will sing and release a new song for human rights for all God's Children. He is truly as beautiful spiritually as he is physically.
He is the greatest force for human rights since my idol Martin Luther King, Jr.

Lake NicaraguaEnvironmentalists say Lake Nicaragua will be under permanent risk due to potential leaks from big cargo ships using the canal
The Nicaraguan Congress has approved a proposal to have a canal built linking the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans.
A Hong Kong-based company has been granted a 50-year concession to build the waterway, which will rival the Panama Canal.
The $40bn (£25bn) plan has been criticised by environmentalists, who say cargo ships will create a permanent risk to Lake Nicaragua.
But President Daniel Ortega says the project will bring prosperity.
Nicaraguan leaders have for centuries dreamt of building a canal linking its Caribbean coast to the Pacific.
Several initiatives failed and the project suffered what seemed to be a final blow when the United States decided to build a canal in Panama, which opened in 1914.

"One of Nicaragua's great riches is its geographic position, that's why this idea has always been around,'' Sandinista government congressman Jacinto Suarez in Congress on Thursday.
"Opposing it is unpatriotic,'' he added.
The projected was approved in Congress by 61 to 28 votes.
A Chinese company - the Hong Kong Nicaragua Canal Development Investment Co - was chosen to carry out the project.
Critics say the company lacks the necessary experience to undertake such a huge project.
The concession can be extended for another 50 years once the canal is operational.
The Nicaraguan government will get a minority share of the profits generated by the canal.
