SAN JUAN - as "a great act of historical justice" described the rector of the Center for Advanced Studies of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean (CEAPRC) archaeologist Miguel Rodríguez López, transfer of remains of Ramon Power y Giralt on Monday to Cathedral of San Juan.
"A very important day because exactly 200 years ago, Power died of yellow fever in the city of Cadiz away from their homeland and their loved ones and in a distressing situation of helplessness and great need. Never in his deathbed Power have imagined that one day another generation Puerto Ricans would do everything he could to his remains rest on peace in his beloved city walled, covered by national flag monoestrellada he never knew. Much less thought it was going to be buried with his faithful friend and compatriot the brave Bishop Juan Alejo de Arizmendi, in the same room where he had received the ring as a sign of commitment and loyalty in the defense of Puerto Rico before the Spanish courts ", Lopez Rodriguez said in a press release.
Rodriguez said "the transfer of the remains of Bishop Arizmendi Power and the chapel which houses the Altar of the Fatherland is a moment of great significance for the country. So we should celebrate with pride and satisfaction of accomplishment. "
About the steps taken in the past around the remains of Power, Rodriguez said that "there are many people and institutions from the 1960s dreamed of identifying the remains of Power and move from Spain to the island. But these efforts can embody the figure of the Archbishop of San Juan, Archbishop Roberto Gonzalez Nieves, who at the end of the long road had the courage to face all kinds of obstacles to goal. The country has a historic debt with Don Ramón Power, with Bishop Arizmendi and with Roberto González Nieves, Archbishop of San Juan. "
The Center was founded 36 years ago by Dr. Ricardo E. Joy, and since 2004 is headed by archaeologist Miguel Rodríguez López. It is an institution offering masters and doctoral programs in History, Archaeology and Literature.
